The system consists of a Bruker Hyperion 3000 microscope coupled to Vertex 70 IR spectrometer. The system is equipped with 3 types of detector: a DTGS with an extension in the far infrared (8000-180 cm-1), available only with the spectrometer. Two MCT detectors (MCT A medium band 100 µm -10000-600 cm-1 , MCT B wide band 100 µm - 10000-420 cm-1), and a focal plane array detector (FPA 64x64 pixels (4000-860 cm-1). The systems is equipped with reflective objectives a 15x N.A. 0.4 n(working distance )24 mm and a 20x N.A. 0.6 objective (19 mm working distance) , and 20x Ge ATR objective (imaging area 32x32mm2 ), and a ATR hemisphere (imaging area 250x250mm2). The system can work in reflection, transmission and ATR configurations and can provide fhypperspectral map and full-field and reaster scanning collection modes.
Potential Results
Hyperspectral infrared Imaging is well suited to characterize organic compounds (binding media, plastic materials…) and some minerals and at a resolution of few microns. It allows probing functional groups belonging both to organic and inorganic compounds, generally found as heterogeneous mixtures in samples from works of art, fossil specimesn or archeological artefacts. The imaging capability provides spatially resolved information on the nature of chemical species related for examples to alteration processes through time (saponificzation, oxidation...), and chemical interactios between organic phases through time.
