The National Gallery Scientific Department

The National Gallery Scientific Department was established in 1935 specifically to carry out heritage science research in support of the care and understanding of its collection. The documentation archive encompasses the collected expertise and experience of staff past and present. The department currently includes members of staff with considerable experience in the examination and analysis of pigments, binding media, varnishes, dyestuffs and other historic paintings materials, as well as the way in which they have been used in paintings and the context of the history of materials and technique. NG ARCHLAB visitors are also able to access expertise in interpretation of technical imaging (digital infrared, XRF scanning, hyperspectral imaging, x-radiography etc), and consultation of the conservation records can benefit from the guidance of experienced conservators.
